Your new tab.
Finally yours.

Startwerk is a free new tab extension for Chrome. It turns every new tab into a calm start page you arrange yourself: Spaces for work and free time, your bookmarks, calendar, weather, feeds and habits. All in one place, the moment you open a tab.

dozensof new tabs, every single day.
Each one a blank, grey page.

The page you see most often is the one nobody designed for you.

Startwerk changes that. Your next meeting, today’s weather, fresh headlines and the sites you actually use are right there before you type a single letter.

Drag, resize, done. No account. No tracking. Three minutes from install to a page that feels like yours.

Features

Everything you need. Right where you start.

Pick the widgets you want, put them where you like and leave out the rest. Your start page shows exactly what matters to you.

Spaces for every part of your day.

Split work and free time into Spaces, each with its own bookmarks and widgets. Switch with the Spaces bar at the top, or set your working hours and Startwerk opens the right Space by itself. Pin a widget once and it keeps the same spot in every Space.

Bookmarks, sorted your way.

Your favorite sites as tidy icons. Rearrange them with drag and drop, or let Startwerk sort them by how often you click. Type / to search them.

Weather, straight from the source.

Right now, the next hours and the days ahead for your postal code. Open data from Deutscher Wetterdienst via Bright Sky.Currently available in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, France, Poland and the Czech Republic. More countries are planned.

Your next meeting, at a glance.

Connect any iCal calendar feed. Your next event appears front and center, the three after it right below.

The news you choose.

Follow any site with an RSS or Atom feed and read fresh headlines right on your start page. Updated every 30 minutes.

Habits that stick.

Track up to five daily habits, keep your streak alive and see how you’re doing over time. Every day Startwerk suggests one habit to focus on.

Breathe.

A guided breathing exercise with a soft, living light. Pick one of four rhythms, add a quiet meditation tone if you like, and let the rest of the page fade out for a minute.

A tip a day.

A fresh productivity tip every morning from a collection of 465, never the same one twice in a row. In English and German.

Your photos, in rotation.

Add up to ten of your own photos and let them take turns. They stay on the device you added them on.

Notes and countdowns.

Jot down what’s on your mind with simple formatting. Count down the days to your next launch, trip or deadline.

Mini Sites.

Place a live website as a tile on your start page, in any size you like. Works with every site that allows embedding.

Your workday, at a glance.

A slim progress bar shows how much of your workday is behind you. After hours, Startwerk opens your free-time Space on its own.

Closed it too soon?

Your recently closed tabs and windows are right there. One click, and they’re back.

Huddles in one click.

Pin up to five Slack contacts, with a photo if you like, and jump straight into a huddle.

Clock and search.

A big clock, digital or analog. Search with Google, Bing, Ecosia, DuckDuckGo, Brave, Qwant, Perplexity, ChatGPT or Chrome’s default.

Your Readwise highlight.

One of your own Readwise highlights every day, right where you start. Works with your existing Readwise account. Startwerk isn’t an official Readwise product.

Make it yours

Your start page. Your rules.

Startwerk adapts to the way you work. Not the other way around.

Drag. Drop. Resize. Pin.

Move any widget wherever you want and give it exactly the size it deserves. Undo and redo if you change your mind.

Light, dark or automatic.

Pick a gradient, a color or your own photo. Or let a dynamic sky follow the time of day.

Speaks your language.

Startwerk is available in 18 languages. Pick yours, and everything follows.

Comes along. Or stays put.

Your setup syncs through your own Chrome account to your other computers. Prefer to keep it local? Turn sync off.

Moving in is easy.

Import your bookmarks bar or your most visited sites with one click. Export your Spaces, bookmarks and feeds as a preset to keep or share.

Quiet by design.

Widget shadows, bold or italic clock, sorting by clicks: small switches, so the page looks the way you want it to.

A sky that knows the weather.

Turn on the weather background and your start page shows the weather outside, softly, as if through a misted window. Real sunrise and sunset times. Rain that lands on the glass and runs down. A starry sky at night that follows the cloud cover. Currently available in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, France, Poland and the Czech Republic.

  • Sun, where the sun actually stands
  • Rain with drops that linger and dry
  • Snow with frost on the pane
  • Moonlight by phase, stars by cloud cover

FAQ

Questions? Answers.

Everything you need to know before you install.

Is Startwerk really free?
Yes. Every widget, every Space, every setting. There is no paid tier and no trial. Startwerk is funded by a few clearly labelled partner recommendations (marked “Ad”), which you can dismiss or remove completely.
Do I need an account?
No. Install it and start. Your setup lives in your browser and, if you keep Chrome Sync on, in your own Google account.
Where is my data stored?
In your browser. Startwerk has no server. Bookmarks, notes, habits and settings are stored locally with chrome.storage. Feeds, calendars and weather load directly from their providers, the same way they would if you visited those sites yourself.
What are Spaces?
Spaces are separate start pages inside Startwerk, for example Work, News and Entertainment. Each has its own bookmarks and widgets. Widgets you need everywhere can be pinned to all Spaces. During your working hours Startwerk can open your work Space automatically.
In which countries does the weather work?
Currently in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, France, Poland and the Czech Republic. The data comes from Deutscher Wetterdienst via Bright Sky. Outside these countries the weather widget and the weather background are not available yet; everything else works everywhere. Only coordinates rounded to about one kilometre leave your browser, never your postal code.
Which languages does Startwerk speak?
18 languages: English, German, Czech, Danish, Spanish, French, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Russian, Swedish, Turkish and Ukrainian.
Does it work in other browsers?
Startwerk is built and tested for Google Chrome. Other Chromium browsers that install Chrome extensions may work, but are not officially supported yet.
Can I take my setup with me?
Yes. Chrome Sync carries your Spaces, bookmarks and settings to your other computers. You can also export them as a preset to keep or share. Photos always stay on the device you added them on.
How do I remove Startwerk?
Right-click the Startwerk icon in Chrome’s toolbar and choose “Remove from Chrome”. All local data is deleted with it. If you want to keep your Spaces, bookmarks and feeds, export them as a preset first.
